How to run IRC Commands via Bot

I have a PHP IRC Bot. It's pretty simple. But when I try to use this code:

It returns an unknown command from the server. Any ideas?

you need to use PRIVMSG, or MODE, or OPER. You should know that.

Yes, I get the socket open. However, I was googleing last night and came up with some interesting info that helped.
